Alert! Sandra O'Conner in Bay area this Saturday From : Joseph Holder Subject : Alert! Sandra O'Conner in Bay area this Saturday Date : Wed, 05 Sep 2001 17:22:35 -0700 An opportunity to show what we think of the Supreme Injustices: Associate Injustice Sandra Day O'Conner will be at the Santa Clara Law School this Saturday giving a speech. The University is a Jesuit school of higher learning located in Santa Clara, California (located in the southern portion of the Bay Area peninsula). As such its campus is probaby private property. I am not sure of the legal status of the streets and sidewalks. It has a museum that is on campus and open to the the public. Lafayette Street at the west side is public. Possible actions: A greeting group at and near the main entrance on El Camino Real Blvd. Large sign boards in the back of pickup trucks parked along the boulevard. Flyer the cars that are parked for the reception with appropriate 8.5X11 flyers. Possibly a walking demonstration down Lafayette during the speech, or even around the entire school. Staying on the sidewalk and acting as pedestrians. September 8, Saturday- Ruffo Society Reception and Reunion Classes Reception for the following classes: `56, `61, `66, `71, `76, `81, `86, `91, `96, and `01 All Alumni Dinner and Ruffo Society Induction for the Class of 1951. The speaker for this event will be United States Supreme Court Injustice Sandra Day OConnor. Reception begins at 5:00 with cocktails. Dinner and speech is 6:30 PM to 9 PM. The reception will be happening in Mission Gardens, an area adjacent south of Mission Church. There will be a tent set up for the event. I doubt if protesting people can access the reception through the main entrance for security reasons. Immediately to the west of Mission Gardens is a building that is then bounded by Lafayette Street. The school property ends along that street. For a map of that area go to: (you also can then click at that page for an aerial photograph of that area. The greeting committee at the main entrance should be there starting at around 4:30 PM to greet her arrival, staying till around 6:15 so the other attendees can see her reception committee. Then people could march around the campus on public sidewalks. Posters made of enlarged copies of the front of 'The Betrayal of America' would be very effective. Take a copy of the book to Kinko's (or similar) and have it blown up on their poster machines. The cover of the book says what is necessary. Other signs of course are needed. For those wanting to show an appropriate reception for this Injustice lets coordinate the efforts immediately through Voter March and other organizations. The address for the Santa Clara School of Law is: 500 EL CAMINO REAL, SANTA CLARA, CA 95053 DIRECTIONS: If you are coming from U.S. Highway 101: Take the De La Cruz Boulevard/Santa Clara exit. Follow De La Cruz Boulevard towards El Camino Real (stay in the right lane) When De La Cruz Boulevard splits, follow the right split over the overpass. Turn right on Lafayette Street staying in the right turn lane. Turn right at El Camino Real. The main entrance to Santa Clara University will be on the right- hand side of the road. If you are coming from Interstate 880: Take The Alameda exit. Travel north on The Alameda. The Alameda will become El Camino Real. The main entrance to Santa Clara University will be on the left- hand side of the road. If you are coming from Interstate 280: Take Interstate 880 north toward Oakland. Exit at The Alameda. Turn left on The Alameda. The Alameda will become El Camino Real. Now the opposition is running radio commercials asking people to call the Governor urging him to oppose the bill. We need you to call the Governor and urge him to support the bill. You can reach his office at (916) 445-2841. Leave a message urging the Governor to support AB 25. (Alternately, you can fax to 916-445-4633) A lot is at stake. Please make your call today and urge all your friends to do the same. _______________ BACKGROUND In 1999 the legislature passed AB 26, by Carole Migden, D of San Francisco. That bill established the State Registry of Domestic Partners allowing same sex couples and certain senior citizen, opposite gender couples to register their partnership with the state of California. All such couples were guaranteed hospital visitation rights by the bill and some state and local government employees were permitted to put their domestic partners on register their partnership with the state of California. All such couples were guaranteed hospital visitation rights by the bill and some state and local government employees were permitted to put their domestic partners on their employer provided health insurance. However, for most domestic partners the benefits provided by AB 26 were very limited. AB 25, introduced this year by Assembly Member Migden, seeks to remedy the situation by giving several new rights to domestic partners. For example, it would allow opposite gender senior citizen couples to register as domestic partners if one of them is over 62 (currently both must be over 62), would allow people to make medical decisions for their partners under certain circumstances, would require certain insurers to offer domestic partner coverage in their group health or disability plans, would require many employers to allow employees time off to care for a sick domestic partner, would require that a domestic partner be given preference when conservatorship is being considered for a person, would add domestic partners to the statutory will form, would remove the income tax liab
